Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the Ransoming of Middletown – July 2014
In a community collaboration of private, public and nonprofit organizations, Main Street Middletown, the Middletown Valley Historical Society and the Central Maryland Heritage League, the Middletown Valley Bank, and the Town of Middletown are proud to commemorate the historical occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Ransom of Middletown.
The Middletown community will come together in July 2014 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War Ransom of Middletown. On July 7 and 8, 1864, Confederate troops marched through Middletown, tired and hungry, threatening the livelihood and safety of our citizens. General Jubal Early demanded a ransom and the Middletown folks pulled together to pay the ransom to save their town. Troops were ordered to head out July 9 having only collected part of the ransom, but leaving the town behind, safe and intact.
